12-year-old Harriet is known as “the hen saver” in her hometown of Kent in the UK. Harriet spends her weekends working with Fresh Start For Hens, a nonprofit that moves hens from the commercial egg business into doting homes. Hens lose commercial viability at 72 weeks when their egg production rates drop, which is oftentimes when they are sent to slaughter. Harriet works at a collection point where hundreds of hens are dropped off from commercial farms and transferred to owners who keep them as pets. She spends time with the hens and keeps them safe while they await to be transported to their new homes. The volunteer-run organization has a vetting process to ensure the hens are going to proper homes, and thousands of hens have been saved thanks to Harriet’s efforts. The animal-loving student, who recently won the BBC Young Reporter Award for documenting her story, claims she does it simply for the love of hens.
