Medical researchers at the University of Alabama and New York University are working on a project to transplant kidneys from pigs to humans. The research is the latest development in the field of xenotransplantation— the use of non-human organs to treat human medical conditions. Teams have transplanted genetically modified pig kidneys into humans experiencing brain death to test if the pig kidneys can produce urine and filter creatinine from the body. The studies have shown great success so far, meaning that pig kidney transplants will likely progress to clinical trials soon.
