In South Africa, women are five times more likely to be victims of domestic violence than the global average. A project called Phola is working to change that by providing creative therapy to South African women, families, and communities that unpacks gender based violence. Phola operates out of a converted shipping container that is transformed into a safe space for individuals to learn, share, and heal. The Phola van travels all around South Africa, specifically focusing on the areas with the most violence, to bring the power of therapy to as many people as possible. Phola believes that therapeutic intervention will help end the cycle of trauma for future generations, and they are committed to protecting as many women as possible from facing violence.
