Therapy at Sea

There’s a new form of mental health treatment in England that combines traditional talk-therapy with the healing powers of nature. Joe Sabien, a mental health clinician and boat lover, founded the Sea Sanctuary– a charity that hosts participants on a four-day sailing adventure where they build meaningful connections, have therapy sessions on board, and experience the benefits of being at sea. Aboard Irene, Sea Sanctuary’s 100-foot ship, guests can assist with hoisting sails, scrubbing decks, or even steering the boat. Up to eight participants can join Irene at a time, alongside the five person crew. Sabien is calling this new wave of mental health treatment “blue health”, and believes the calmness of the sea lowers anxiety and allows participants to feel restored.
