A new material is being used to create temperature-controlled clothing— and its design was inspired by squid. Squids rely on light manipulation to change the color of their skin, and researchers at the University of California in Irvine wondered if they could mimic that process for fabric. Similar to squid, a portion of human body heat is emitted as infrared radiation when a person warms up. UC Irvine’s material manipulates and adapts to that emission, creating a thermoregulatory feature that allows the material to adjust to the wearer’s desired temperature. The washable, flexible, and breathable material can be integrated into fabric, and is particularly well suited for cold-weather apparel like ski jackets, insulated gloves, and hats. Researchers are now translating their creation into other wearable systems, as the practical applications for temperature-controlled fabric are full of potential.
