The SS United States ocean liner has been moored off a Philadelphia pier for decades, but it will soon have a new purpose as the world’s largest artificial reef. Historically, sunken ships have served as safe habitats for marine life seeking shelter. As coral reefs continue to deteriorate around the world, conservation efforts are getting more creative— including purposefully sinking unused ships to be used as make-shift reefs. The SS United States was originally constructed in the 1950s to ferry troops around the country, and was then converted to a travel ship that crossed the Atlantic until it was decommissioned in 1967. The large vessel will soon travel to its final destination in Destin Fort Walton Beach in Florida, where it will transform from a historic ship into a home for marine species.
