Rocket Building Team for Young Immigrants

The world’s largest student rocket-building competition took place this month, which included a team of immigrant children in Alexandria, Virginia. Students on the Frances Hammond Middle School team recently immigrated from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Turkey, and Ukraine, and bonded over their shared love of science. Besides learning about rockets, the team also helps each other with their English skills and transition to the United States. The annual rocket-building competition is sponsored by the Department of Defense and NASA, and brings middle school students from around the country together to build and launch rockets carrying eggs with supervision from NASA astronauts. The goal is for the egg to land safely on the ground without damage, which the Frances Hamond team did successfully.
