Colossal Biosciences, a biotech company focused on de-extinction, is working on bringing back the extinct dodo bird. The Dodo Project involves using the Nicobar pigeon, the dodo's closest living relative, as a genetic donor. By sequencing the genomes of the dodo and the Nicobar pigeon, scientists aim to edit the pigeon's DNA to recreate the dodo's physical traits and behavior. The process includes creating hybrid animals through genetic engineering and implanting the edited cells into embryos. Colossal is partnering with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation to identify suitable locations on the island of Mauritius for reintroducing the dodo. The project could not only bring back an extinct species but also potentially aid in ecosystem restoration. Colossal is on the forefront of de-extinction science, a controversial effort that comes with distinct challenges, but could ultimately revive tons of lost species.Â
