Cheryl Gaw, a South African woman, has rescued over 2,500 pugs through her organization, Pug Rescue South Africa, which she and her husband established in 2010. Their journey began in 2008 when her husband gave her a pug as a gift, and the couple eventually opened their home to foster dozens of pugs in need. The rescue center now cares for nearly 200 pugs, many of which have been abandoned, are sick, or were given up by owners who could no longer care for them. The center operates with a packed daily schedule, including feedings, medication, grooming, and playtime. Despite the challenges, including high veterinary bills and the constant shedding of hair, Gaw emphasizes the joy and love pugs bring. She warns prospective owners about the breed’s health problems, such as breathing issues due to their short muzzles, and advises them to be prepared for significant vet costs and hair maintenance. Through her tireless work, Gaw continues to rescue and rehabilitate pugs, helping them find new homes whenever possible.
