Researchers at the University of Missouri are in the process of developing a road pavement material that is made from sustainable plastics. The pavement, which is made of materials like scrap tires, is an eco-conscious alternative to asphalt, which deteriorates over time and is harmful to the environment. The goal of the project is to develop a pavement material that is sustainable, adaptable, cost effective, and able to be incorporated into many climates. Researchers are testing various recycled materials on a stretch of highway in Columbia, Missouri, to see what combinations would be most effective. Once completed, the recycled plastic pavement could be a potential sustainable solution to fractured road systems across America.
