Plastic Eating Beetle

Scientists in Kenya have discovered a beetle that can digest plastic pollution. Larvae of the Kenyan lesser mealworm, which is an Alphitobius darkling beetle, can consume polystyrene, commonly known as Styrofoam. This discovery is the first instance of an insect species with the ability to break down plastic. In experiments, scientists found that specific bacterias found in the larvae’s gut allow for the beetles to digest the plastic. This discovery offers a potential biological solution to plastic pollution in Africa, which is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation. Future research on the beetles will be aimed at harnessing their gut bacteria and enzymes for large-scale plastic waste management to combat climate change.
