Many are surprised to learn that the largest underwater canyon in the USA is just 100 miles southeast of New York City. Hudson Canyon, which is two miles deep, is home to various species like whales, sea turtles, dolphins, and deep-sea coral. If that wasn’t cool enough, there are also several historic shipwrecks in the depths of Hudson Canyon. President Biden recently announced a proposal to make Hudson Canyon a national marine sanctuary. When officially approved as a national marine sanctuary, Hudson Canyon will become a site for education, marine conservation efforts, tourism, and scientific studies on the effects of climate change.
