What kind of projects do you work on?

Each Well Aware water project is a unique and ongoing effort to provide clean water to our partner communities for generations. In Kenya, we installed a rainwater collection and purification system at Uasonyiro Primary School that allowed for the student population in the area to grow drastically. We drill boreholes in communities, which provides lifelong access to clean drinking water. In partnership with the Chris Long Foundation, Well Aware is constructing a new, solar-powered deep borehole that will transform the Mitero area, impacting over 4,000 people. We also created the Well Beyond App, which connects communities and NGOs to bridge the problematic gap in accountability in the water sector.

Can you tell me about your reach?

Worldwide, more than 2.2 billion people lack access to clean water, and about half the world’s population lacks access to safe sanitation. To date, we have completed over 125 clean water projects in Kenya, Tanzania, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and disaster relief zones, reaching over half a million people in the process. 100% of our wells and water systems operate properly and last over time, compared to the industry average of 40%. When clean water is made available to communities, disease rates drop and education rates rise, particularly for girls and women. We prioritize installing water systems in schools so that students and the surrounding community have access to safe drinking water.

What is your new sanitation program?

Well Aware now offers eligible communities access to both clean water systems and new toilets. Our sanitation initiative amplifies the impact our work is having on African girls and women who are disproportionately impacted when there is a lack of water and sanitation in their communities. When girls reach puberty, they experience high dropout rates as a result of a lack of sanitation facilities, which perpetuates a cycle of limited employment opportunities and economic empowerment. Our sanitation program provides toilet facilities to schools like the Daraja Academy, which is a school that provides free secondary education to girls in Kenya.

How can individuals get involved in your work?

Together, we have the power to create a world where every human has access to the basic right of clean water. A donation of only $15 provides one person with lasting clean water. You can make clean water a part of your company culture by becoming one of our partners. The Well Aware merchandise shop allows you to transform your shopping dollars into clean water impact when you buy from our give-back partners. Well Aware also has a Classrooms to Clean Water program, which empowers the next generation of global leaders to make a positive impact in the world through interactive classroom activities, leadership development, and engaging fundraising activities.
