Meet the Team Behind: Stack Up

Stack Up supports US and Allied veterans by promoting positive mental health and combating veteran suicide through gaming culture. For the last decade, Stack Up has used a shared love of video gaming to connect veterans with life-changing resources. Learn more about their work here!

What is the connection between video games and mental health?

Military personnel face extraordinary pressure in the line of duty and upon returning home, and many feel a lack of purpose. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals 10-34 years old, and PTSD affects millions of veterans. Studies show that playing video games can minimize PTSD symptoms, as the online community fosters communication and social connection. 55% of frequent gamers say that video games help them connect with friends, 64% of US households own a device that can be used to play video games, and 50% of veterans use video games to combat the challenges associated with military service. By building community and offering therapeutic relief, games can be a very effective tool when it comes to suicide prevention.

Can you tell me about your programs?

Stack Up has several pillar programs that help veterans confront their issues and have fun. Supply Crates are video game care packages full of the latest games, gear, and consoles sent to deployed units to raise morale and build camaraderie, and to veterans to combat the isolation that is felt after exiting military service. Air assaults are all expenses paid trips for veterans to experience in-person video game and geek culture events, helping to connect them with a broader community. The Stacks program gives volunteers the opportunity to develop a range of skills like public speaking, problem solving, and leadership to help them positively impact the community.

What does your Overwatch Program entail?

The Overwatch Program is a peer-based mental health initiative focused on crisis mitigation. We provide the community with the tools needed to identify and react to mental health challenges before a crisis point is reached. To achieve that, we host Mental Health Game Nights that are an outlet for veterans to relax, connect with others, and discuss ongoing mental health issues. We also have a dedicated text channel and forum for non-crisis mental health discussions where members can share experiences and support one another. The Overwatch Program has evolved over time as we learn and grow with our members, helping them effectively navigate issues before it’s too late.

What can visitors find in your community center?

Our permanent residence in Los Angeles, called Phalanx House, is part office, part AirBnb, and part community center. At Phalanx House, veterans can participate in board game nights, Dungeon and Dragon adventures, movie and pizza parties, and relaxing pool days. Stack Up is looking to connect with the nearly 300,000 veterans living in the area, and will also use the house to fly veterans out to LA for the Air Assault program. Phalanx House is a new, unique initiative that will allow our veterans to have a home-base where they can build connections, express themselves, enjoy fun experiences, and access support that they need– all in one place.
