Meet the Team Behind: Lady Freethinker

Lady Freethinker has started a movement against any and all forms of animal abuse and is dedicated to saving animals around the world. By investigating and exposing cruelty on a global scale, LFT has created lasting legal change that protects animals from harm. Learn more about how to get involved in protecting animals here.

What is the mission of LFT?

LFT is working to expose and stop animal cruelty through investigative reporting, media, citizen petitions, and partnerships with rescuers and activists on the ground worldwide. We are transforming the way the world treats animals with the ultimate goal of human-caused suffering being a thing of the past. Lady Freethinker was founded in 2013 to help build a world that thinks beyond the norms that enable human-caused suffering, and evolve to a free and peaceful society for all beings.

What kinds of stories do you investigate?

Our undercover investigations expose the hidden realities animals suffer through on a daily basis. We have investigated the dog and cat meat markets in Hanoi, Vietnam, fur farms in China that are skinning foxes, and found appalling conditions for orangutans in Thai zoos. Our investigations turn into petitions that share these stories and garner millions of signatures, allowing people to demand justice with just a click. These petitions put pressure on international governments to change their harmful practices and end animal cruelty. By going undercover for the animals, LFT is able to be a voice for those who can’t speak for themselves.

Does LFT do any on-the-ground rescue work?

When war broke out in Ukraine, Lady Freethinker partnered with a Romanian rescue organization to sponsor the rescue of 19 dogs who were left behind, as well as the costs of their medical care. We have saved elephants being exploited and harmed in tourist attractions in Thailand and India. We have also facilitated the rescue of dozens of dogs from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and brought them to safe homes. Additionally, LFT offers grants to animal rescue aid programs around the world, and so far has provided over $850,000 to support their on-the-ground efforts.

Can you tell me about some of your victories?

After years of campaigning in South Korea, LFT was instrumental in the legal banning of dog meat trade in the country, which will save up to a million dogs per year. Our investigation into dog-fighting in Chile allowed for leaders to implement the strongest ever prison sentencing for animal abuse the country has ever seen. We have put individuals in the United States behind bars for torturing dogs, monkeys, rabbits, goats, horses, and more. Victims of animal cruelty deserve justice, and our animal rights activists work hard to ensure they get it.
