Meet the Team Behind: Hunger Fight

Hunger Fight is on a mission to end hunger and illiteracy for children in North Florida, which are the two most important issues that impact the success of children in school. By providing nutritious food and educational materials, Hunger Fight gives underprivileged children hope for the future. Learn more about their work here!

Can you tell me about the need for your work?

1 in 4 children don’t know where their next meal will come from. Many children are not just missing out on food, they’re missing out on education, too. We believe all children deserve access to food and education to give them hope, consistency, and security. The problem is that many children in our own backyards go hungry every day, both physically and mentally, and they’re left feeling scared, depressed, worried, and angry. We understand the impossible choices many families are forced to make every day when it comes to food, shelter, and safety. That’s why we’ve spent nearly a decade distributing millions of meals and over 231,000 books to children across Northeast Florida and the Panhandle.

What do your programs entail?

Our “Feed the Backpacks” program provides weekend nutrition to children who are enrolled in the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Plan at school. Our four-serving, nutritionally-balanced, great-tasting, stand-alone meals provide the vitamins and nutrients necessary for a child to return to school ready to learn. For “Feed the Need to Read”, we focus on emergency literacy skills by providing age-appropriate books to preschoolers and daycares on a monthly basis. 90% of a child’s critical brain development occurs by age 5, and a lack of reading skills can impact learning and future success.

Can you tell me about your packing events?

Eradicating hunger and illiteracy is an ongoing war, not a battle, and we can’t win this war alone. Packing events give people a way to join us in the fight. At a packing event, people work together to pack weekend food boxes for children in need. Packing events are perfect for schools, businesses, religious facilities, and other service organizations. One of the best ways to demonstrate corporate social responsibility is to support organizations like Hunger Fight that make a real impact in the local community. With the help of our packing events, Hunger Fight distributes millions of meals per year and is able to respond to the hunger needs of other populations in emergency situations like natural disasters.

What is the Capital Campaign?

Hunger Fight’s Capital Campaign supports the purchase of land and building materials for our own facility. Hunger Fight is growing rapidly to meet the increase in the need for food support and our literacy program aims to eradicate hunger and illiteracy in our communities. Through this growth, it has become clear that in order to meet those needs we must expand our facilities. This next phase in our history will allow us to further invest in our community, host more in-house packing events, and provide more meals books to those in need. We encourage you to lend a helping hand and become a partner in the fight against hunger and illiteracy.
