What programs does Camp Horizon offer?

Camp Horizon was founded in 1982 when a group of friends decided to give back to foster kids in Atlanta by launching a free summer camp where they can have fun, destress, and learn life skills along the way. Our week-long summer camp is designed to enrich the lives of children in foster care by creating experiences that are meaningful and empowering. Due to the transient nature of foster care placement, we quickly realized that we needed year-round programming. Now, in addition to our summer camp, we have a leadership development program, adult mentoring program, holiday events, family reunions, and recreational activities to keep kids involved.

Can you tell me more about summer camp?

Every foster child is paired with a camp counselor, and that 1-to-1 dynamic helps build trust over the course of the week of camp. Besides the traditional camp activities, there are self-esteem programs where campers are encouraged to define their true potential and dream big. We work on positive self-image, interpersonal skills, and encouraging feelings of achievement. Children who participate in Camp Horizon return year after year, with some of our first campers now working as counselors and volunteers. It’s a true family, and our kids look forward to spending time there every summer.

What are the key values that drive your mission?

Our four core pillars are empowerment, community, adventure, and access. We provide psychosocial support which increases resilience, connect youth and families to build bonds, expose youth to new experiences, and provide programs at no cost to our participants. Through our pillars, we restore hope and dignity to end the cycle of abuse and neglect in the foster care system, helping to grow hurting children into healthier adults. Our goal is that kids will take what they learn at Camp Horizon and use it as a powerful agent for social change.

How can individuals get involved in the work you do?

We are always looking for summer camp counselors and volunteers for our outings and special projects. If you know a child who is in foster care, you can refer them to us via email and help make a difference in their life. You or your business can help by sponsoring an event, such as our annual fundraiser, and every donation helps us break the cycle of abuse and neglect. You can also help us spread the word about Camp Horizon— tell you friends and family about our mission and help us expand our reach in the process.
