Meet the Team Behind: Animal Place

Animal Place is an animal sanctuary and advocacy group dedicated to caring for rescued farmed animals and educating the public on the importance of animal welfare. By sharing information about the truth behind the food industry, Animal Place fights for the rights of farmed animals and gives them a safe place to call home. Learn more here

Why do you focus on farmed animals?

We are dedicated to rescuing and providing sanctuary to farmed animals while advocating for their rights. These sentient beings deserve compassion and protection. We advocate for farmed animals because they are some of our planet’s most abused and exploited creatures. They experience grave suffering within our food system, and we strive to create a more humane and just world for them by raising awareness and promoting change. Our animals arrive from small and large farms, slaughterhouses, research facilities, and neglect or cruelty cases. All find a haven where their needs are met and their individual quirks respected.

Can you tell me about some of your animals?

Since the inception of our rescue and adoption program in 2010, Animal Place has rescued, rehomed, or provided permanent refuge to 28,729 hens, 233 roosters, 64 goats, 27 turkeys, 24 pigeons, 12 pigs, 4 ducks, and more. Alfalfa and Sprout are sibling bunnies who were found abandoned in a park before an activist brought them to our care. Ivan and Mishka are two of our rescued pigs— they were used as entertainment in a pumpkin patch and were going to be sold for slaughter at the end of the fall season. Thankfully, volunteers rescued them before that happened and brought them to Animal Place. Minnie the sheep was brought to us with her limbs bound by duct tape, clearly coming from distressing circumstances. Since arriving at our barn in 2018, she has fully recovered and opened her heart towards human and fellow sheep.

How does Animal Place promote vegan living?

You can explore the ethical, environmental, and health aspects of vegan living with our “Why Vegan” guide, and can find tons of free vegan recipes on our website. Animal agriculture is cruel, and farmed animals are smart, unique individuals who experience emotions. Beyond protecting our wildlife, a vegan diet is also beneficial for your health. Our “Food for Thought” program helps nonprofit organizations extend their compassion by adopting a plant-based menu policy for events. Nonprofits often serve animal products to raise funds for their cause without considering the broader implications. We address this by providing resources, drafting policies, and offering grants to support the transition to a plant-based menu.

How can individuals get involved in the work you do?

Caring about the suffering of farmed animals is a great first step— take your compassion further and be a real ally to these animals. Start by educating yourself about how farming impacts animals and why you want to see the suffering of nonhumans end. Once you learn the issues, which you can do on our website, you’ll be a knowledgeable activist. You can join our volunteer team and help with animal care, events, and animal socialization to develop your skills and become a better activist. We offer tours, plant-based cooking classes, and workshops at the sanctuary where you can learn more about our work and meet our animal residents.
