Scientists on a National Geographic Pristine Seas Expedition in the Solomon Islands have discovered the largest known coral colony in the world. Measuring 111 feet wide, 104 feet long, and 18 feet tall, the colony is three times larger than the previous world record holder. Coral colonies are made up of thousands of polyps, small organisms with hard exoskeletons that form coral. Coral reefs play a crucial role in maintaining ocean life, impacting the livelihoods of Pacific Island communities. In a time when many coral reefs are threatened by climate change, this discovery offers a glimmer of hope for the future of marine ecosystems. For their groundbreaking find, the expedition team was recently awarded the Capitol Hill Ocean Week Conservation Innovation Award.
