Indonesia’s Free Meal Program

The President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has announced a multi-billion dollar program that will provide free meals to 83 million people. On the first day of the program, over half a million people showed up to receive food for themselves and their families at hundreds of kitchens across the country. The initiative aims to combat child malnutrition, which runs rampant in rural areas of the country, as well as create regional economic growth. Meals will be provided to schools to encourage education enrollment and will be available for pick-up in certain areas. It’s anticipated that meals will reach 3 million people in the next two months, 15 million people by the end of the year, and 83 million people in the next four years as the program expands into new areas.
