Abigail Kwartekaa Quartey, a 27-year-old from Jamestown, Accra, defied societal norms and family opposition to become Ghana's first female world boxing champion. Despite initial resistance from her community, Quartey trained at the Black Panthers Gym and overcame financial challenges, even pausing her career in 2017 to sell lottery tickets to fund her passion. Her determination led her to victory in November 2024, when she won the WIBF World Super Bantamweight title against British boxer Sangeeta Birdi, becoming the first Ghanaian athlete to claim the title. Quartey's achievement has inspired young women in her community to pursue their athletic dreams, challenging traditional gender roles in Ghanaian sports.
