Two childhood sweethearts, Jim Dougal and Betty Davidson, were reunited after more than 85 years apart thanks to a 1936 school photo and the detective work of Jim’s son, Alistair. Jim and Betty used to walk to school hand-in-hand in Eyemouth, Scotland, before Jim’s family moved away in 1939. While researching his father's past, Alistair became fascinated by an old class picture and set out to track down the children in it. His search led him across the globe but eventually brought him to Betty—still alive at 96 and living in North Yorkshire. With help from a local Facebook group and a stroke of luck, Alistair contacted Betty, who instantly remembered Jim. She even had a second photo of the two of them as children with her sister. The reunion was emotional and joyful, as the pair, now both 96, re-created their childhood photo and reminisced about their days growing up across the street from each other. Of the 32 children in the class photo, only three are still living—Jim, Betty, and one other—making their reconnection all the more meaningful. As Jim put it, “It is just incredible really.”
