The airline Swiss, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Group, is developing the first ever solar-powered planes. Swiss has partnered with a solar energy company to create “liquid sunlight”, called syngas, that powers planes. Syngas can be used as an alternative fuel for transportation devices and have far fewer toxins than fossil fuels. It’s created with heat, steam, and carbon dioxide. With this development, Swiss is on track to become the first fossil fuel free and carbon neutral airline by next year. If their project is successful, Swiss could pave the way for other airlines to become more environmentally conscious.
