A choir in Australia is using music as a way to help mitigate symptoms associated with dementia. The 40 person group, called The Unforgettables, practices singing on a weekly basis and offers participants an opportunity to maintain social skills and work on their memorization. Those with dementia often feel isolated as they lose the ability to work and interact with others, but The Unforgettables gives members a safe space to form friendships while experiencing the joys of music. Research shows that music is one of the strongest triggers for memory, allowing members to access memories they never thought they would be able to remember again. The Unforgettables has been a huge success since the group formed last year, and founding members are now looking to start additional choirs across Australia to reach even more dementia patients.
