Jesse Dufton, a British climber with only 1% vision due to rod-cone dystrophy, has achieved a significant milestone by leading a climb of the challenging El Matador route in Wyoming's Devils Tower. This accomplishment adds to his impressive record, which includes being the first blind climber to lead an ascent of Scotland's Old Man of Hoy in 2019. Dufton, who has been climbing since age 11, relies on his acute sense of touch and detailed verbal guidance from his wife and climbing partner, Molly, to navigate and ascend complex rock formations. His achievements continue to inspire and challenge perceptions of what is possible for climbers with disabilities, highlighting the power of determination and adaptability in overcoming obstacles.
