Katherine’s Junk Festival is a one-of-a-kind annual event in Australia that celebrates the beauty in recycling and turning trash into artwork. Artisans share pieces made from various junk items, like Brendan Penzer’s metal sculpture made from empty dog food tins from his pets. Many participants and visitors come in costumes made from newspapers, fabric scraps, and other discarded items. The festival encourages artists to use materials that are otherwise wasted in the creative process, and to think outside the box when it comes to making something new out of something old. Katherine’s Junk Festival brings the rural Katherine community together and reminds people that art can be made from anything.
